Early Origins

Lady Banton (Marilyn Dennis) is the founder and heartbeat of Seduction City Sound—a true veteran in the game with over 30 years behind the decks.

Coming out of North London in the mid-’80s, Lady Banton was raised in the culture—watching sound men build their sets in youth clubs and taking inspiration from pioneering women like Ranking Miss P and DJ Elayne. From early on, she knew her place was in the sound. She started out with the ’80s Ladies, a strong all-female DJ collective, before linking up with Night Nurse in 1989 to form Mellotone Sound System. From house parties to community dances, they built their name the authentic way—selector to selector, crowd to crowd—with one goal in sight: Notting Hill Carnival.

In 1994, that goal became reality.

Mellotone secured their spot on Telford Road—and never looked back. Year after year, they’ve held the corner, pushing a clear mission: uplift women in dancehall and deliver a real, clean reggae sound. From backing Queen Omega on her 2004 UK tour to touching the main stage at Hyde Park for the Queen’s Jubilee (featured on BBC News), the journey speaks for itself.

Seduction City Sound

In 2016, Lady Banton stepped forward with a new chapter—Seduction City Sound. Built with the support of seasoned engineers and a powerful crew, including Selectors, Majestic Lady and MC_ Mad X, the sound continues to ‘shell down’ Carnival year after year. Telford Road—now known as “Jamaica Corner”—is where the vibe lives every August bank holiday. Lady Banton is still moving, still building, still representing.

Festivals and Beyond

From Women in Black British Music for Brent’s London Borough of Culture (2020), Glastonbury Festival (2023 & 2025), ReggaeLand (2023), her reach continues to grow.

This is more than music—this is sound system culture.

And Lady Banton is part of its foundation.
